Do I Need a Schengen Visa for Eastern Europe

In short: Citizens of the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and most Western countries do not need a Schengen visa for Eastern Europe. They can visit Schengen countries visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. From Q4 2026, a Schengen visit will also require ETIAS — but that is not a visa.

Who Needs a Schengen Visa

Over 60 nationalities travel to the Schengen Area visa-free. The list includes US, UK, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand, Japanese, South Korean, Taiwanese, Brazilian, and Mexican citizens, among many others.

Citizens of countries not on the visa-exempt list — including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, China (no full agreement as of 2026), and most African nations — do need a Schengen visa to enter Schengen countries in Eastern Europe such as Poland, Hungary, or the Czech Republic.

A Schengen visa allows stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period across all Schengen countries. It is applied for through the embassy or consulate of the country you will visit most, or your first point of entry if the visits are equally distributed.

The ETIAS Addition (Not a Visa)

From Q4 2026, visa-exempt nationalities travelling to Schengen countries will also need ETIAS. This is not a visa. It is a pre-travel screening authorisation — €20, applied for online, approved in minutes in most cases.

ETIAS is not required by nationalities that already need a Schengen visa. If you have a Schengen visa, you do not need ETIAS. If you are currently visa-free, you will need ETIAS once it launches. These two requirements do not overlap — one or the other applies, not both.

Non-Schengen Eastern Europe: Different Rules

For non-Schengen countries in Eastern Europe — Serbia, Bosnia, Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Kosovo — Schengen visa rules are irrelevant. These countries set their own visa policies.

Citizens of many countries that do need a Schengen visa can still enter some non-Schengen Eastern European countries. Albania, Montenegro, Serbia, and North Macedonia specifically allow entry for holders of valid US, UK, or Schengen visas even if the traveller’s home country would otherwise require a visa. Check each country’s official rules for your nationality.

FAQ

Can I use a Schengen visa to enter Bosnia or Albania?
Albania and Bosnia accept valid Schengen visas (including used single-entry visas from some countries). This is each country’s own policy, not a Schengen rule. Confirm with the country’s official entry guidance before travel.

Do Indian nationals need a visa for Eastern Europe?
Indian nationals need a Schengen visa for Schengen countries (Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, etc.). For non-Schengen countries like Serbia and Albania, Indian nationals can enter with a valid Schengen, UK, or US visa in some cases — check each country’s specific rules.

Is a Schengen visa valid for all 29 Schengen countries?
Yes. A Schengen visa allows entry to all 29 Schengen member states, regardless of which country issued it.

Does ETIAS replace the Schengen visa?
No. ETIAS is only for visa-exempt nationals. If your nationality requires a Schengen visa, you still apply for the visa through an embassy. ETIAS is an additional layer for those who previously entered with just a passport.
